The Spokane Home Builders Assocation is hosting a refresher course for local home renovators who have previously completed the Certified Renovator Lead Certification in compliance with Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RPP) regulations. The training will take place On Wednesday, September 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SHBA Conference Room. SHBA is located at 5813 E. 4th Ave, Suite 201 in Spokane.

This training will re-inform renovators about the important job of preventing lead poisoning in our local community. As renovators chip away paint, take down walls, and perform even the most basic renovations, lead paint can unknowingly contaminate the home. Lead can cause major health complications for all age groups.

During the training, RRP contractors will learn the basics of how to renovate safely. They will be educated on the dangers of lead-based paint and how to operate around this material, especially when children are present in the home or commercial space. SHBA instructors will also provide refreshers in the EPA’s RRP Rule, as well as Washington State regulations.

As EPA RRP regulations do change, trainees will also be updated on any changes in rules and recommendations for RRP Certified Renovators. According to the SHBA website, the training will specifically include the following information:

    • Regulations
    • Testing for Lead-Based Paint
    • Review Set-Up Practices
    • Review of Prohibited Practices, Personal Protective Equipment, and Dust Control
    • Cleaning and Checking Your Work
    • Record-keeping
    • Training of Non-Certified Renovators
    • Review and Test

Renovators are a significant part of the Spokane community. As drafty residential windows, for example, can boost energy bills by 10 to 25%, we depend on renovators and contractors to make our homes more comfortable and efficient. This is why it is important to keep your certifications up to date.

As a reminder, if you completed the Certified Renovator Lead Certification five or more years ago, you are required to get re-certified. Training instructors will ask you to present your Lead RRP Certificate to prove that you have already completed the first training.

This refresher course is $195 per person, which includes all course materials and lunch.
