When you are mulching make sure that you only use about two to three inches in your landscape. More than three inches of mulching can be harmful to your soil. The mulch will not allow the plants to grow as effectively as they should. If you lay too much mulch your plants may not grow at all.

Another thing that you need to know is that you should not let the mulch touch the base of a tree. Instead, lay the mulch at the tree a couple of inches around it. If the mulch is touching the tree you are leaving the tree open to bug infestation and diseases that may kill it.

Finally, the last thing that you need to know is that you should always turn your mulch. Turning your mulch should be down before you apply a new layer of mulch. There are a variety of tools that you can buy to help with this. This process brings up some of the old mulch to the surface and keeps it fresh.
